Separate Voice Noise Tests From Intent Tests

A noisy recording with a complicated request can reveal a problem while leaving its cause unclear. Separating the dimensions gives the investigation a useful baseline.

Quick answer: Start with a clear task in a controlled audio condition. Vary acoustic difficulty and task ambiguity separately before combining them. Inspect available audio, transcription and submitted operations to distinguish audibility, interpretation and execution failures.

Use a small test matrix

For an illustrative address-update assistant, begin with a simple fictional address and an explicit correction. Then introduce a documented acoustic variation while keeping the task stable.

The matrix is a proposed design. It does not claim a measured noise tolerance or a universal signal-to-noise target.

Preserve the actual stimulus

Record how the audio condition was produced and what reached the target. A scenario named “noisy caller” is not enough to reproduce the stimulus.

If the harness cannot establish consistent conditions, describe the limitation. Do not compare two runs as an isolated noise experiment when their task content or transport path also changed.

Locate the first mismatch

Listen to the relevant segment where authorized. Compare the audible input, available transcript and tool arguments.

If the transcript loses a postal-code character, that suggests one investigation path. If transcription preserves it but the operation changes it, inspect the later mapping. Neither observation alone proves a complete root cause.

Test recovery behavior

An assistant should have defined behavior when the evidence is unclear: ask for repetition, confirm a critical field or follow another supported fallback.

Also retain a clear-audio case. A candidate that requests repetition on every turn may hide a failure by making normal interactions unnecessarily difficult.

Report each dimension and its conditions separately before drawing a broader conclusion.
