A Voice Test Needs a Caller With a Goal

Shashank Agarwal

A synthetic caller needs something to accomplish. A persona such as “impatient customer” describes style, but it does not establish whether the voice agent helped the caller reach an appropriate result.
Quick answer: Define the caller’s goal, starting information, constraints and acceptable outcomes before adding personality or acoustic variation. Use a test environment that exposes the relevant task state. Evaluate the conversation and the outcome separately.
Give the caller a concrete task
Consider an illustrative appliance-repair scenario. The caller wants to move an existing visit to an available afternoon slot. They know the appointment reference but not the technician’s schedule.
The goal is not “have a realistic conversation.” It is to reach an appropriate scheduling result, or receive a clear explanation when the requested change is unavailable. Use synthetic details and a controlled appointment fixture for the test.
Separate the scenario ingredients
| Ingredient | What it contributes |
|---|---|
| Goal | The result the caller is trying to reach |
| Starting information | What the caller already knows |
| Environment fixture | Which appointments and slots actually exist |
| Permission boundary | Which changes require confirmation |
| Persona | How the caller communicates |
| Expected outcome | What a reviewer should accept or reject |
Changing all of these at once can make a failure difficult to interpret. Start with a clear task, then vary the dimensions that matter for the application.
Give the scenario a legitimate unsuccessful outcome
If no afternoon slot exists, a supported explanation and an appropriate alternative may satisfy the test’s defined behavior. Inventing an available slot should not count as success merely because the caller sounds satisfied.
Keep an unambiguous available-slot case too. An agent that refuses every rescheduling request is not demonstrating useful task completion.
Inspect evidence beyond the dialogue
A transcript can show that the agent promised a change. The test harness needs appropriate action or state evidence to establish whether the change occurred. Where that evidence is unavailable, record the limit of the conclusion.
