Test Interruptions as Conversation Events

Shashank Agarwal

An interruption is more than overlapping audio. The caller may be correcting a date, stopping an operation or asking for a repeated phrase. The test should assess that conversational purpose.
Quick answer: Specify who interrupts, what information changes and what behavior should follow. Inspect available audio and timing alongside the transcript and action record. Keep interruption detection separate from whether the agent correctly updates the task after hearing the caller.
Give the interruption a purpose
In an illustrative delivery-change call, the agent starts reading an offered day and the caller says, “Wait, I meant next week.”
The acceptance condition should cover whether the agent yields appropriately, captures the correction and avoids applying the earlier proposal without valid confirmation. A short overlap alone cannot establish all of that.
Write the event contract
| Event element | What to define |
|---|---|
| Trigger | The agent utterance or task stage |
| Caller contribution | Correction, cancellation or clarification |
| Expected response | Yield, acknowledge and resolve the changed request |
| Operation boundary | What must remain uncommitted |
| Evidence | Audio, available timing, transcript and actions |
Use a test endpoint and synthetic details. Do not run a cancellation scenario against a real customer booking.
Inspect more than transcript order
Text may show the correction after an agent sentence without preserving the overlap or whether the audio was intelligible. Audio and event timing can clarify the sequence when available.
If the harness cannot reliably trigger the intended event, record that limitation. A missed simulator cue is different from an agent ignoring a clear correction.
Preserve an ordinary turn
Test a similar request without an interruption. A candidate that stops speaking on every small sound may improve one interruption case while making ordinary explanations difficult to hear.
Repeat relevant scenarios under documented conditions. Preserve variation and failed attempts rather than choosing one attractive recording as the result.
