Record an Agent Failure Without Leaking Customer Data

Shashank Agarwal

A useful bug report needs enough evidence to explain the behavior. It does not need every personal detail that happened to travel through the application.
Quick answer: Define the debugging question, retain the smallest relevant fields and restrict access to original evidence. Build a separate synthetic reproduction where possible. Label substitutions and redactions, then verify that the transformed case still exercises the failure. Data minimization alone does not establish legal compliance.
Separate the internal record from the shareable case
Imagine an illustrative delivery assistant that ignores a corrected postal code. The internal investigation may require a restricted operation record. A public issue can often use fictional addresses that preserve the correction pattern.
Keep a clear mapping of which artifact is original, redacted or synthetic. A reconstruction should never be presented as the customer's actual conversation.
Choose fields by purpose
| Field | Possible treatment |
|---|---|
| Credentials and authorization headers | Exclude from debugging content |
| Customer identifiers | Replace when identity is not relevant |
| Address content | Use a controlled fictional fixture |
| Tool operation and result class | Retain if needed to explain behavior |
| Evidence reference | Restrict to authorized reviewers |
This is an engineering checklist, not advice that a particular transformation makes data anonymous.
Validate the transformed example
Replacing a long address with “address” might remove the ambiguity that caused the failure. Preserve the structural feature being tested: the earlier value, the correction and the final selected value.
Test the synthetic case in a controlled environment. If it does not reproduce the behavior, say so and keep investigation access appropriately limited.
Check export and propagation paths
A debugging packet can leak through screenshots, attachments, logs and trace metadata. OpenTelemetry's context propagation guidance cautions against putting sensitive information in propagated baggage.
Review the actual destination and access scope before sharing. Keep retention and removal responsibilities explicit, especially for temporary investigation exports.
