Preserve Context Across Agent Handoffs

Shashank Agarwal

A handoff can preserve a trace relationship while losing the information the next agent needs to do the job. Execution correlation and task context solve related but different problems.
Quick answer: Pass a structured task packet containing the goal, constraints, established results, open questions and permission boundaries. Record who produced it and what the receiving agent consumed. Correlate execution records separately, and avoid propagating credentials or unnecessary personal data.
Define the receiving agent's contract
For an illustrative research-to-writing workflow, the writer needs verified sources and claim limits. A summary saying “research complete” does not establish which claims can be used.
The handoff should identify source links, the supported finding and any unresolved conflict. It should also distinguish a proposed conclusion from a verified observation.
Keep the packet specific
| Field | Example responsibility |
|---|---|
| Goal | Deliver the requested comparison |
| Constraints | Use only the specified scope and date |
| Established work | Source-backed findings already reviewed |
| Open questions | Gaps requiring further investigation |
| Permission | Actions allowed and actions needing review |
| Evidence references | Artifacts the receiver can actually access |
Have the receiving stage acknowledge missing required fields rather than silently inventing them.
Correlate execution without leaking context
OpenTelemetry's context propagation documentation explains how trace context links operations across boundaries. Those identifiers do not substitute for a task packet.
Keep sensitive business content out of broadly propagated baggage. Apply the application's access rules to evidence references, since a link alone does not grant permission.
Test a broken handoff
Use a synthetic packet with a missing source, a conflicting constraint or an unavailable artifact. Check whether the receiver asks for the missing information, records a limitation or follows the defined fallback.
Also test a complete packet. A receiver that refuses every handoff is not demonstrating useful coordination.
The acceptance condition should cover the receiver's actual work and whether it preserves the packet's constraints.
