What to Inspect Before Changing an Agent's Model

Changing the model can be a useful experiment. It is easier to interpret when the team first checks whether the workflow supplied the information and operations required for success.

Quick answer: Inspect the task contract, available evidence, tool inputs and outputs, context assembly and evaluator setup before choosing a candidate model. Use a controlled comparison if the model remains a plausible cause. Preserve the original failure and report all configuration differences relevant to the result.

Check the evidence path

For an illustrative inventory assistant, a wrong answer may follow an empty lookup caused by a location mismatch. A more capable model cannot establish stock information that the workflow never supplied.

Inspect what the application passed to generation, not only what the source system contained.

Review the surrounding system

AreaUseful question
TaskIs expected behavior explicit?
RetrievalDid relevant evidence reach the decision?
ToolsWere arguments and response semantics correct?
ContextWere corrections or constraints omitted?
EvaluationDid the grader receive the right fields?
ExecutionDid the harness complete the intended test?

A failure in one area does not rule out other weaknesses. It identifies a concrete issue to address or control in the next experiment.

Make the replacement test meaningful

If testing another model, hold appropriate fixtures and acceptance checks stable. Record provider settings and any adaptations required by the candidate.

Do not compare a repaired workflow on one model with a broken workflow on another and attribute the difference entirely to the model.

Choose the next change from evidence

A candidate might involve a filter, mapping function, clarification rule or model replacement. Each should have an observable expected effect.

These proposed checks do not imply that every problem is outside the model. They make the comparison more useful by establishing what the application actually asked each model to do.
