What an Agent's Final Answer Leaves Out

An agent's final answer is the user's main experience, but it is only one part of the evidence about an execution. It can describe an operation accurately, inaccurately or before its outcome is known.

Quick answer: Review the final response together with relevant tool requests, operation results and available state evidence. Distinguish a proposed action, an attempted action and an established outcome. Grade whether the explanation matches what the system actually knows, including uncertainty and partial completion.

Separate a promise from an outcome

Consider an illustrative file-processing assistant that says, “Your report is ready.” The tool record may show only that a background job was queued.

A correct explanation would reflect the queue state rather than assert completion. The task might permit an asynchronous result, but the acceptance condition needs to say so.

Build an evidence ladder

ObservationWhat it can establish
Agent proposes an operationIntent expressed in the conversation
Tool request is recordedAn attempt was submitted
Tool acknowledges receiptThe provider accepted or received it under its contract
Completion record is availableThe recorded operation reached the specified result
User receives the artifactDelivery can be checked separately

The exact meaning of an acknowledgment depends on the tool's documented contract. Do not infer durable completion from a generic success label.

Inspect partial outcomes

A multi-file job may complete some items and fail others. A final answer that says only “done” hides useful information even if the request returned successfully.

Keep item-level outcomes where needed and have the response explain the established scope. A partial result is easier to act on when the remaining work is explicit.

Evaluate explanation consistency

Use a controlled fixture where a job queues, completes or fails. Check whether the final message follows the supplied state in each case.

This proposed test evaluates an observable communication contract. It does not require guessing the model's private reasoning or treating its explanation as a complete causal account.
