Publish a Product Metric That Can Be Rechecked

Shashank Agarwal
A reader should be able to understand how a published metric was produced, even when underlying records must remain private. A number and a screenshot are rarely the whole method.
Quick answer: Preserve the event definition, identity rule, time window, exclusions, aggregation method and source version. Publish the relevant specification and limitations without exposing private records. Keep a reproducible internal query or calculation so an authorized reviewer can recheck the result.
Write the specification first
For an illustrative active-developer measure, the team might count distinct eligible accounts that complete a defined product action during a stated period.
The chosen action matters. Signing in, attempting a request and receiving a useful result establish different behavior.
| Specification field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Qualifying event | Exact action included |
| Identity | Person, account, workspace or organization |
| Window | Start, end, boundary convention and time zone |
| Exclusions | Internal tests, duplicates and invalid records |
| Method | Query or calculation version |
| Limit | Missing data and known attribution issues |
This is a proposed metric design, not an actual API.market analytics result.
Keep the method stable enough to compare
When the event schema or identity resolution changes, record the revision. A jump may reflect measurement changes rather than new customer behavior.
Where appropriate, recalculate comparable history or explain why the series cannot be directly compared.
Separate the public note from private evidence
The public page can describe the method and aggregate result. An authorized internal reviewer can inspect the query and source records.
Do not publish personal identifiers merely to make a metric appear transparent.
Make corrections explicit
If the method was wrong, preserve the correction and explain its effect. Silently replacing the number makes later references difficult to interpret.
The API metric guide and evaluation-report guide show why units and conditions should travel with results.
