What to Preserve From an Earlier Venture

Shashank Agarwal
An earlier venture can leave useful artifacts even when its original product is no longer the priority. The challenge is to preserve knowledge without importing stale assumptions into the next company.
Quick answer: Retain decision notes, interface contracts, source history and controlled examples with clear ownership and access. Label the original context and limits. Revalidate product behavior, rights and operating assumptions before reusing an artifact or presenting an old result as current.
Preserve context with the artifact
For an illustrative internal parser, the code alone may not explain why a timeout exists or which input forms were intentionally unsupported.
| Artifact | Context to retain |
|---|---|
| Interface | Intended caller and supported inputs |
| Decision note | Alternatives and reason for the choice |
| Test fixture | What behavior the test establishes |
| Operating guide | Dependencies and failure recovery |
| Metric | Unit, period and measurement conditions |
| Ownership record | Rights and access responsibilities |
This is a proposed retention checklist, not a description of private company files.
Do not transplant a metric
A historical service's request volume does not establish the new product's active customers. An employer's business impact does not become a founder's company revenue.
Preserve the original entity and period wherever a historical result is relevant.
Revalidate the useful part
A component may be technically reusable while depending on a private dataset, an expired service or an undocumented operating assumption.
Create a bounded test under the new conditions. Record what changed and which conclusions remain unresolved.
Explain continuity without inventing it
My career includes earlier ventures, engineering roles and current work on Noveum AI and API.market. The public founder profile keeps that chronology inspectable.
The useful continuity is a set of questions and artifacts that can be reviewed again. It does not require every venture to be described as a success.
Use the regression-test guide when preserving a specific technical behavior.
