What a Growth Claim Needs Before Publication

Shashank Agarwal
A growth statement becomes harder to assess when the headline drops the unit or the baseline. “We doubled” leaves the reader guessing what changed.
Quick answer: Record the entity, metric definition, reporting period, baseline and data limits before writing the claim. Verify that the public wording preserves those details. Keep registrations, activity, requests, transaction volume and company revenue distinct, even when they all appear in the same product story.
Start with the underlying event
For an illustrative API report, growth in request attempts might reflect more customers, more scheduled jobs or more retries. The count alone cannot distinguish those explanations.
| Claim ingredient | Question |
|---|---|
| Entity | Which product or company is being measured? |
| Unit | Users, requests, tasks, money or another measure? |
| Period | Which dates and time zone apply? |
| Comparison | What baseline uses the same definition? |
| Exclusions | How are tests, failures and duplicates treated? |
| Source | Can the result be rechecked appropriately? |
This is a proposed publication review, not a new growth result.
Preserve scope in the headline
If the evidence covers registered accounts, say registered accounts. Do not upgrade the phrase to active customers.
If the result comes from a selected cohort, preserve that selection. A favorable sample should not become a claim about every user.
Check the explanation separately
A changed metric can be observed without establishing why it changed. Treat an attributed cause as a hypothesis unless the design and evidence support that conclusion.
A product launch, seasonality or retry change may coincide with a rise. State what was measured and what remains uncertain.
Give readers an inspection path
Use the API metric guide for unit distinctions and the evaluation-report guide for scoped comparisons.
A clear claim can still be compelling. Its strength comes from letting the reader understand exactly what increased.
