Audit the Useful Infrastructure Left Behind by a Failed App

A discontinued app can leave behind useful infrastructure. Reusing that infrastructure is a product hypothesis, not proof that another business will succeed.

Quick answer: Separate the component from the app's original workflow. Identify an external user, the input and output contract, operating responsibilities and evidence of demand. Test a bounded use case before interpreting reuse as a new market opportunity.

Use the historical example carefully

In the published PipFeed origin account, I describe moving from a news-reading app to a URL-parsing API. The app's customer-acquisition problem did not make every underlying service worthless.

That account contains historical figures and projections. They should not be presented as current Noveum or API.market revenue.

Audit the component

AreaQuestion
UserWho needs this independently of the old app?
InterfaceCan they supply valid input without internal knowledge?
OutputCan their system use the result?
OperationsWhat support and maintenance become necessary?
EconomicsWhat would usage cost and what would be charged?
EvidenceWhat observation would support or reject demand?

The worksheet is a proposed method, not a report of a new customer experiment.

Identify inherited assumptions

An internal service may rely on private credentials, a fixed data source or a caller that always validates input. External use makes those assumptions part of the product work.

Document error behavior and limits before asking someone to build on the interface.

Test the new hypothesis directly

A small permitted integration can reveal whether the component produces a useful artifact. Interest alone does not establish recurring usage or willingness to pay.

Preserve unsuccessful tests too. The point is to learn which offering is useful, not to force a success narrative from a failed app.

See the first-workflow guide for defining observable outcomes and the pricing review for the commercial contract.
